Article submitted by Kara Rusch, Castlewood Library.
In light of the recent posts concerning teens not reading or accessing reading resources only in digital format, Kara submitted a great article about the amazing increase in teen books being purchased as of late. Some hail this recent teen book publishing period as the "new golden age of young adult literature." This article addresses the statistics that highlight how teens are, in fact, reading and how bookstores are accommodating to this trend.

Great article - thanks, Kara! While there has always been great lit aimed at the teen audience, it was far too often overshadowed by the patronizing "teens don't want anything heavy" marketing. Quality books always have a huge impact.
I would like to share an article I wrote for ALD's Teen Page/Random Stuff, wgich will be posted in the near future. You'll see that not only do I try to catch our teen readers' interest through language, but I focus in on something that will pique their itch to read and be cool and have fun at the same time. I encourage all of you to approach our teens will a spark of creatvity and a feel for what might get them thinking: "Hey, I'd like to check that out!" Stretch! If you have any ideas for items you'd like to see on Random Stuff, please shoot me an email - thanks! Read on:

This was a really interesting article. I am of the Sweet Valley High generation, and boy did I suffer from it. I remember going to the teen section at my library and seeing about 15 books available for checkout. I was supposed to chose from that? Instead, I went home and stole my mom's romance novels from her. These days when I walk through our teen section, I practically salivate over all the options. I am so happy that authors now recognize the value of and the limitless options they have with teen literature.
I think it's great that more authors are writing for teens. Plots and characters have more depth and intrigue. Much of what I have read lately is action packed and great for teen boys! Airman by Eoin Colfer was a great read with humor, romance, fighting, torture and of course heroes. I really have no interest in reading adult fiction because the selection and quality of teen lit is so awesome
