Publishing houses, bookstores and libraries must be doing something right!
This recent article from the New York Times highlights the increase in fiction / recreational reading by adults. The author Motoko Rich outlines what studies attribute this recent wave of interest, especially among the 18 to 24 year old who are said to have the reading rates increase "most dramatically... (when they) had previously shown the most significant declines."

I think one of the reasons for an increase in interest is the coffee shops in bookstores and libraries where young people can read and socialize. They can talk about books and movies which is why they are at the library or the bookstore. I also think the study should measure reading of non-fiction besides poetry and plays. Don't you?
I think also that the rise of "fun" reading, such as the article mentioned Harry Potter and Twilight has encouraged a lot of people who don't typically read much to actually pick up a book. I have lots of kids coming in asking for books that are "similar" to HP or Twilight. Books like these are easy, fun, and quick to read and written in a contemporary style so it doesn't seem like a chore to read.
